Its foundation stone, inscribed "the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us," was laid in 1907, and its final finial was set in place in 1990. Officially named the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, the Cathedral serves a three-fold mission: It is a National House of Prayer for All People, a Great Church for National Purposes, and the Chief Mission Church of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. Receiving no financial support from the federal government or any national church, Washington National Cathedral was built and is operated solely with the support of private donations. |
