| "No estate in United America is more pleasantly situated than this," is how George Washington described his Mount Vernon home in 1793. Washington spent most of his adult life designing and improving upon the mansion overlooking the Potomac River. Hundreds of visitors came to Mount Vernon to meet Washington and admire his stately residence. The mansion achieved its present-day appearance by 1788, incorporating such features as the cupola, colonnades, and dependency buildings. Over one million visitors come to Mount Vernon each year, making it the most celebrated historic home in America. |
