Blue and white porcelains from China have been a fixture on American tables for more than two centuries. George and Martha Washington first acquired them in the early 1760s and, over the next thirty-five years, would make at least nine additional purchases of blue and white china for their home. The resulting mix of patterns, held together by the same color scheme, would have given a pleasant variety to the table settings at Mount Vernon. In the ensuing two hundred years, blue and white china has continued to grace American homes, where for many it has become, in the words of Mrs. Washington, "the blew and white china in common [everyday] use."
