The Hermitage
Counted Cross Stitch Kit
| In 1804, Andrew Jackson purchased a farm which he called the Hermitage. The mansion was built between 1819 and 1821, a simple brick home in the Federal style, a conservative choice for this time. In 1831, major remodeling took place. The library, dining room wings, and a one-story colonnade of ten columns were added. In 1834, a fire destroyed the upper story and damaged the lower rooms. The rebuilding was finished in 1836 and was a strong statement of the fashionable Greek Revival style. The border for the cross stitched design was adapted from the original ashlar blockpatterned wallpaper in the Hermitage side halls, printed in France around 1835. Block or stone pattern papers were considered very appropriate for halls, and this paper is described on the original receipt as "entry" paper. |
